Career Research Summer Activities

Summer is almost here! In between having fun in the sun and at the beach summer is a perfect time to spend researching careers.

Spend 30 minutes at your local library and complete a CAREER INTEREST WORKSHEET

Review a book on a career of your choice.

Ask if your library subscribes to the New Careers Internet Database. Using the database you can print off hundreds of  career ebooks. The database is maintained by the Institute for Career Research.

Research using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handout.

Interview someone doing the job you have an interest in:interview

If you know someone already doing  what you want to do ask them if you can interview them about their job.

If you don’t know someone, you can use the list of Professional Associations for the career field your interested in to find a local chapter. Go to one of their meetings or contact them and let them know you would like to request an informational interview from a member.

Ask the following questions:

What do you do in your job?
What do you like best about what you do?
What do you like least about what you do?
What education do I need to do what you do?
What other types of jobs could you be promoted to in your career field?
What skills do I need to be able to do this job?
What advice do you have for me to succeed in this career field?

IMPORTANT: Be sure to talk to you parents first before contacting anyone.
